The Editing Begins

This week we have a painter in the house turning our blue bedroom and the yellow bathroom green. The bathroom, at least, is a big improvement. The jury is still out on the brown bedroom but at least the workmanship is top notch. By Wednesday every room in the house will be a different color from what it was when I moved in. Just so we can move again.

In practical terms, having rooms upstairs undergoing painting means that Busy B can’t nap in his loft/room. Too much noise and smelly smells. He’s also still suffering from a yucky cold so he really just wants to be laying on me anyway so I spent the entire morning with him cuddled up on my lap. The last half of the marathon of closeness was him sleeping on my left arm until my sleeve was soaked with his sweat and snoozing itself. This wouldn’t have been that big of a deal if the dog hadn’t also been needy and territorial about the other half of my lap. With both of them competing for space I was feeling a bit trapped. With the television tuned to Nick Jr. and the remote of out reach I felt tormented.

Desperate for something to do that wouldn’t wake the child or annoy the dog into waking the child I dialed my sister to talk about the novel. She finished reading it over the weekend and had some preliminary comments for me. Some of them I had expected while some were things that hadn’t occurred to me. She’s kind of a smart cookie.

A few of the things she mentioned were my tenses, repetitive phrases, and dialog tags. I thought about offering to get a massage to deal with the tenses but that type of humor doesn’t amuse her so I refrained. If you’re reading this I hope you appreciate it.

What I just did there in that last sentence is another thing she brought up. The entire story is written in first person except for one aside that jumps into second person for a moment. That’s a no-no. Fortunately for my dignity I already knew that and wrote it more for my own amusement than because I thought it was a good idea.

I’m not sure if this is the “correct” way to edit a lengthy piece of writing, but I need to start somewhere so tonight I’m beginning to correct my tenses. Everything will first person past tense. If I manage to weed out some repetitive phrases while I’m at it that’s a bonus. I’ll save cleaning up my dialog tags for the next round. Of course, if anyone were to suggest a better method gleaned from experience or sources I could be directed to, that wouldn’t be amiss.

On a final note, I had what I consider to be a happy little breakthrough this evening. I’ve thrown out my original working title which was neither clever nor apropos and replaced it with one that is hopefully both. For now I’ll be referring to my work in progress as Cut and Run. Yay for having a title!

Welcome to December

I’m a day late and a dollar short, but that’s not unusual. I figured that since I took November off from blogging that no one would mind if I took one more day to not write anything at all. As you can see from the flashy badge and neat little widget on the right, I made it to my goal. I needed 50k to “win” NaNoWriMo but my personal goal was 80k to finish my book which I did at approximately 12:30am on Monday, November 30. Yay me!

It was a great month. I did more and better than I imagined I was capable of and it feels great to be able to say, “I wrote a book.” Now that I’m used to writing every day I’m planning to keep up the habit so hopefully you’ll be seeing a lot more posts from me. At least until I start editing the book or outlining my next project.

For right now though I have hours and hours of television sitting on my DVR and I haven’t read a book since October. And it’s December so there’s lots of shopping, cleaning, decorating and baking to be done. I’ve also got a small indoor triathlon in January that I need to train for. Oh, and we’re getting the house prepped to go on the market in February since we’re planning to move. I’m going to be busy but I’ve got a lot on my mind that’s just been rattling around waiting for November to end so I could examine my thoughts and put them in order to share. All in good time.

Today, if you think of it, raise a glass and toast to a successful NaNoWriMo and many more to come.

P.S. Kudos to Melonie over at The Original Drama Mama for winning her first NaNo with me. She’s a rock star!

11/5 @ 12:30am – 19,582
11/6 @ 12:02am – 22,086

Crazy November

NaNoWriMo has begun. More than 100,000 people across the world are now frantically trying to write novels of at least 50,000 words by the stroke of midnight on November 30th. While this has been going on since 1999 I’m participating in the madness for the first time. Eventually there will be a widget in the right column of the blog letting everyone know how many words I’ve managed to spout but it’s not working yet.

For those who are curious, I don’t know if I’ll be sharing my finished product with anyone. I may post some excerpts here but probably not until I’m finished. For now just please wish luck for me and sanity for DH who is going to be starting a new job next week while holding down the fort so I can be a noveling machine.

Oh, and for those who are curious, my current word count is 7108.

Disease, Contagions and Carrier Monkeys

Disease has descended on us more virulently than bell ringers do on stores in December.  In the last week four out of five inhabitants of our house have been claimed by illness of one sort or another.  BB had a fever last Monday and has been clingy, miserable and dripping at the nose since then.  Wednesday knocked me flat on my patootie with a fever, aches, chills and accompanying whining which became more of a chorus when MonkeyBrain (formerly known as Spy Baby) had a temperature spike in the evening.  By Thursday DH was complaining of a headache and sore throat which continue to dog him.  Most of us are muddling through but my little MB’s symptoms are lingering.

Yes, she has…dun dun duuuuun…the FLU!  Not the piggy pox which is good and bad.  H1N1 would have been a little scary and a lot of people would probably be hexing us from a distance to ward off the germs.  That would have sucked.  Of course other kind souls would have probably taken pity on us and brought us meals, offered to run errands and be generally kind and charitable because we would be those poor unfortunate souls who got the Swine Flu and there but by the grace of God.

So now the house is full of creepy-crawls infectious no-see-ems.  The only one to remain unscathed is PK.  I pondered that briefly then recognized the reason for her health as well as the root of our lamentable situation.  It is clear to me that PK is hale and hearty simply because she an almost teenager who is thoroughly disgusted by slimy baby kisses.  Everyone else in the house sees a booger-faced toddler with his chubby hands clambering round our necks leaning in for an open-mouthed snot kiss and can’t break his precious little heart by turning aside.  Thus we are stricken.  PK sees the same thing and scurries upstairs to lock herself in her room with blaring headphones.  Thus she is spared.
